Attitude Precedes Form, a Member's exhibition from the Black Church Print Studio, showcases the remarkable work being produced by Black Church Print Studio today. The exhibition premieres new work by members of the studio, responding to the curatorial questions: What are our goals for women in Ireland today? And what challenges do we now face?

 

Featuring projection, sound art, publication, print and performance we believe this exhibition will extend into the public conscious and serve as a point of discussion long after it closes. Attitude Precedes Form is curated by Dr. Hilary Murray for Black Church Print Studio, and features works by Ella Bertilsson & Ulla Juske, Chloe Brenan. Janine Davidson, Emma Finucane, Rachel Fallon & Eleanor Phillips, Anja Mahler, Sadbh O'Brien, Alison Pilkington and Lee Welch.



 

Ella Bertilsson & Ulla Juske have developed a work that explores the values held by individual female members of the studio. Reflecting on the role of women in Irish society, this archival sound work, will be played over the exhibition and comprise of a series of interviews between the artists and the women at Black Church Studio. Chloe Brenan's "The Hole in the Donut" will be projected onto the front window of The Library Project. This abstract film focuses on the duality of male/female, a falling lens moves up and down, meeting at times, and moving away at others. Alison Pilkington's printed work reflects on the female body and Janine Davidson's photos investigate a now derelict girl's school in Belfast. Davidson's work delves into the role of the State in female development; notions of access are also investigated. Collaborators, Emma Finucane, Rachel Fallon & Eleanor Phillips are developing a printed zine for the exhibition which will be free, and can be taken by people visiting the show. The zine details interviews with woman involved in gynecological care in Ireland, from multiple view-points, the zine will look into the treatment of the mother during childbirth, another section looks at the childless woman; the final installment exploring the life of the older woman. We hope this work will also serve as an archive (accessible to the public) to inform thinking on woman's rights in Ireland. This diversity of voice is further reflected in those taking part. Artist Sadbh O'Brien, a recent graduate, new to the studio is pushing her practice in this exhibition, developing her identity as an artist. For this show O'Brien will reshape her work, moving from 2D into a 3D form, creating a table/kitchen installation that reflects the normality of home life; it is also the space in the home where discussion and political debates take place. Lee Welch's new work, Scene Sighed Teas Isle Foreword Feat examines how difficult it is to rise above external challenges and pressures and retain one's individuality. How it is innately and biologically human of us to not want to be outcast. Anja Mahler's experimental film works draw on medium and touch, the artist at points absorbing herself into the work, identifying herself as medium, and at other times serving as linker to other works in the exhibition.

 


 

ABOUT THE CURATOR

Hilary Murray has a broad knowledge of visual arts curation and currently works as the Director and Curator of ArtBox Projects and the MONTO arts group. She has also curated exhibitions events at several OPW venues (Farmleigh, Casino Marino), The Irish Museum of Modern Art, as well as dealing with Dublin City Council on a regular basis for off-site ArtBox Projects events. She has a strong knowledge of contemporary art practice both in Ireland and abroad.
