Robert Kelly

Biography

Robert Kelly is a graduate of Dun Laoghaire School of Art and Design and The National College of Art and Design. His work is process led. Much of what he does is the product of a playful response to the materials and techniques worked with. While variables of motifs can be repeated from one image to the next the work is essentially exploratory. Positive and negative mark making are explored through hard ground, soap ground and sugar lift processes using aquatint. Concepts of order and chaos, time and motion along with themes of flow and erosion inform his practice. While the work is influenced by nature it is most often a distillation of such references. Colour and texture play an important function in the creation of images which are most often located in that elusive space between experience, memory and imagination. The work alludes to a liminal space, a space between, rather than depicting a representational space.
