Artist's Statement

 

Colin Martin’s practice cross references the traditional genres of European painting with theatrical and lens based narrative to create a staged familiar reality.

 

‘Chalet Town’ is a new sequence of works by Colin Martin and is based on research undertaken by the artist in Europe and America. This series utilises the vernacular environment of a dormitory holiday town to create a narrative context in which the identity, values and states of mind that underpin and form communal space is explored.

 

Biography

 

Colin Martin graduated from DIT in 1994 and is currently completing his MFA in NCAD. He has held solo exhibitions at Temple Bar Gallery 1999, West Cork Arts Centre, Ashford Gallery RHA 2006 and the Fenton Gallery 2009. Recent Group exhibitions include’ Camera Obscura’, Light House Cinema 2009 ‘Thirty Thousand Years Later’ Pallas Contemporary Projects and ’Returning’ Highlanes Gallery. Recent Awards include The Arts Council Bursary 2007–2004, Thomas Dammann Award 2008, Hennessy Craig Scolarship 2004 and Golden Fleece Merit Award 2004.
